ACT
The ACT consists of five sections: English, math, reading, science, and an optional essay (we no longer recommend taking the ACT with essay).
- In September 2025, the ACT will become the "Enhanced ACT." Though there are no significant plans to change the format or difficulty of the exam, here are the announced changes:
- The test will become shorter than it had been. It will now be 2 hours and 45 minutes.
- The time per question will be slightly improved (though the shorter test appears to have removed more easy questions than hard ones, so more time with harder problems may not result in a pacing advantage for some students).
- Math multiple choice options will change to 4 from 5.
- The science section will become optional. (However, it will be up to individual colleges whether they still want to see a science score. For the time being, Empire Edge recommends taking the ACT with science.)
- The composite score will now be computed as the average of the English, math, and reading scores. A separate science score will be provided for students opting to take that section as well.
- Our expert tutors adapt the curriculum for each of their ACT students to address each student’s unique strengths and weaknesses. Weekly tutoring sessions and nightly homework assignments encourage mastery of the material. Progress is continually assessed and strategies amended accordingly.
